THRESHOLD: Crossing Into Your Most Authentic Power

“The script of individual destiny is secret;

it is hidden behind and beneath the sequence of happenings

that is continually unfolding for us.“

~~ John O’Donohue

Greetings to all my precious people!!

On this ancient night of Samhain, when the veil between worlds grows gossamer-thin, we stand at the most potent threshold of the year. But there’s another crossing happening here – one that has nothing to do with ghosts and everything to do with the woman you’re becoming. After weeks of practicing discernment, conscious breathing, sacred boundaries, healing grief, and trusting intuition, you stand at the threshold of your most authentic power.

The Sacred Stepping-Off Point

This isn’t about becoming someone new. This is about finally becoming who you’ve always been beneath the layers of should and supposed-to, beneath the masks of people-pleasing and the armor of self-protection. At midlife, every threshold becomes an invitation to step more fully into the truth of who you are and the medicine you came here to offer.

The Neuroscience of Sacred Crossing

Dr. Antonio Damasio’s research on “somatic markers” reveals that our bodies know when we’re approaching significant life transitions long before our conscious minds catch up. These threshold moments activate what he calls the “embodied wisdom network” – neural pathways that integrate emotion, intuition, and rational thought to guide us through major life transitions.

Research from the Institute of HeartMath shows that people who approach thresholds with “coherent heart rhythm” – the physiological state that comes from aligning head, heart, and gut wisdom – make decisions that serve not just their immediate needs but their long-term flourishing. This coherence naturally increases with age and accumulated wisdom.

Dr. Carl Jung’s groundbreaking work on midlife individuation reveals that the most profound thresholds aren’t external but internal – moments when we stop living according to others’ expectations and begin expressing our authentic essence. His research showed that people who successfully navigate midlife thresholds emerge with what he called “integrated wholeness” – the ability to hold paradox, embrace shadow, and serve from authentic rather than compensatory power.

But perhaps most significantly for this threshold moment: studies on “liminal space” from anthropologist Arnold van Gennep show that conscious threshold crossings literally rewire our brains for expanded possibility. When we approach transitions as sacred rather than scary, we activate neuroplasticity that allows us to embody new ways of being.

Samhain’s Threshold Medicine: The Wisdom of Becoming

In Celtic tradition, Samhain marks not just the end of harvest but the beginning of the deep dreaming time when new possibilities gestate in darkness. This ancient threshold celebration honors a profound truth: every ending contains the seeds of a new beginning, and every death makes space for rebirth.

The threshold you’re standing at right now:

From Seeking Approval to Trusting Inner Authority: You’ve learned to discern what’s yours and what isn’t, to breathe through uncertainty, to maintain boundaries that protect your essential energy.

From Avoiding Pain to Transforming Suffering into Wisdom: You’ve discovered that grief, when welcomed, becomes medicine, and that your wounds can become your gifts.

From Overthinking to Embodied Knowing: You’ve remembered that your body holds wisdom your mind hasn’t yet understood, and that intuition is your most reliable guidance system.

From Individual Healing to Collective Service: You’ve begun to sense that your personal transformation is preparation for larger work in the world.

From Surviving to Thriving: You’re ready to step into the phase of life where you serve not from woundedness but from wholeness, not from what you lack but from what you’ve learned.

The Four Gates of Threshold Crossing

1. The Gate of Release: What Must Be Left Behind

Based on rites of passage research and transition psychology

Every authentic threshold requires conscious release:

  • The Identity Inventory: Who have you been that you’re ready to stop being? (The people-pleaser, the perfectionist, the one who carries everyone else’s feelings)
  • The Expectation Funeral: What dreams or plans are you ready to grieve so that new possibilities can emerge?
  • The Fear Examination: What are you afraid will happen if you step into your full power? (Often our greatest fears point to our greatest gifts)

Samhain Release Ritual: Write what you’re ready to release on paper, burn it safely, and let the smoke carry your old self away.

2. The Gate of Claiming: What Wants to Be Embraced

Drawing from authentic self research and developmental psychology

Thresholds require not just release but reclamation:

  • The Essence Excavation: What parts of yourself have you been hiding or downplaying? (Your wildness, your wisdom, your fierce love, your prophetic voice)
  • The Gift Recognition: What medicine do you carry that the world needs? (Your ability to see truth, hold space, create beauty, inspire courage)
  • The Power Acknowledgment: What are you ready to own about your capabilities and calling?

This week’s practice: Speak one authentic truth that you’ve been keeping quiet.

3. The Gate of Integration: Bringing Shadow and Light Together

Adapted from Jungian psychology and wholeness work

Authentic power comes from integrating all parts of yourself:

  • The Shadow Work: What qualities do you judge in others that might be undeveloped gifts in yourself? (Selfishness that could be healthy boundaries, anger that could be righteous fire)
  • The Paradox Embrace: How can you hold seemingly opposite truths? (You can be both soft and strong, both humble and powerful, both wounded and wise)
  • The Wholeness Recognition: You are not broken and don’t need to be fixed – you need to be fully expressed

4. The Gate of Service: Your Medicine for the World

Based on generativity research and conscious aging studies

The ultimate threshold leads not to self-absorption but to service:

  • The Medicine Question: How is your healing meant to become medicine for others?
  • The Legacy Inquiry: What do you want to be remembered for? What impact do you want to have?
  • The Service Alignment: How can you use your accumulated wisdom, skills, and passion to serve something larger than yourself?

The Halloween Moon: Crossing Under Cosmic Blessing

Tonight’s New Moon in Scorpio on Samhain creates the most potent threshold energy of the year. Scorpio governs death and rebirth, transformation and regeneration. This lunation asks: What version of yourself is ready to die so that your most authentic self can be born?

Samhain Threshold Ritual:

  • Create sacred space with candles, photos of ancestors, and symbols of what you’re becoming
  • Sit in meditation and feel yourself standing at the threshold
  • Ask: “Who am I becoming? What wants to emerge through me?”
  • Make one commitment to honor this emerging self
  • Step physically across a threshold (doorway, drawn line) as you speak your commitment aloud
  • End by saying: “I cross this threshold in service of love”

From Personal Threshold to Community Transformation

Here’s what I’m witnessing: women who cross their own thresholds consciously become permission-givers for others to do the same. They become the ones who see through masks to essence, who call forth authenticity in others, who create spaces where transformation is not just safe but inevitable.

This is the leadership our world desperately needs. Not the kind that comes from titles or positions, but the kind that emerges from women who have done their own threshold work and can now guide others across their own sacred crossings.

Questions for reflection:

  • How might your threshold crossing inspire others to step into their own authenticity?
  • What becomes possible when you stop hiding your light and start embodying your full power?
  • How is your personal transformation actually preparation for collective healing?

The Ultimate Invitation: Threshold as Sacred Service

As this fall journey concludes and your real work begins, I want to share something I’ve been creating for women who understand that their personal transformation is just the beginning, not the end, of their calling.

If you’re standing at this threshold feeling called to something bigger – if you sense that your healing journey has been preparation for serving as a guide for others, if you’re ready to use your accumulated wisdom as medicine for your community, if you feel called to step into your role as a modern elder who bridges ancient wisdom and contemporary needs – then I have something special to share with you.

I’m creating a year-long Modern Wisdom Keepers journey for women who are ready to transform their threshold crossings into sacred service. This isn’t just another program – it’s a laboratory for women who understand that their midlife awakening is actually preparation for becoming medicine for a world in transition.

This is for you if:

  • You’ve done significant personal healing work and are ready to serve from wholeness rather than woundedness
  • You feel called to use your life experience as medicine for others
  • You want to step into leadership that feels authentic rather than performative
  • You’re ready to trust your wisdom enough to share it boldly
  • You sense that your local community needs the kind of guide you’re becoming

If this threshold calling resonates, reach out. Your crossing might be exactly the permission someone else needs to step into their own power.

Integration Invitation: Living Your Threshold

As you move through this Samhain portal, remember that every day offers threshold moments – opportunities to choose authenticity over approval, courage over comfort, service over safety.

You’ve spent six weeks learning to discern what serves, breathe through uncertainty, maintain sacred boundaries, transform grief into wisdom, trust your inner knowing, and now – to cross the threshold into your most authentic power.

This isn’t the end of your journey. This is the beginning of the work you came here to do.

The veil is thin tonight. The ancestors are cheering. Your authentic self is ready to be born.

Step across the threshold. Your people are waiting.

The Fall Harvest Wisdom Series is complete. Your real work begins now.

P.S. As you cross this threshold, I’m curious: What feels different about who you’re becoming? What wants to emerge through you in this next phase of your journey? Your threshold crossing might be the inspiration someone else needs to step into their own authentic power.

does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom

but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind.”
