Here is a radical thought to consider:
What if your symptoms aren’t problems?
What if they’re not proof something’s wrong with you, not evidence of failure, not signs you’re broken?
What if they’re breadcrumbs?
Breadcrumbs your body is leaving to guide you HOME.
How We’re Taught to See Symptoms
Western medicine teaches: Symptom = problem. Problem = fix it.
Headache → take pill
Exhaustion → drink coffee
Anxiety → medicate
Weight gain → restrict calories
Insomnia → sleep aid
Pain → suppress it
The goal: Make symptoms go away.
The assumption: Body is malfunctioning.
But what if that’s backwards?
What Chinese Medicine & Ayurvedic Medicine Observe
I’ve been studying Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda for 20 years. And here’s what these ancient systems understand that we’ve forgotten:
Your body is not malfunctioning. Your body is COMMUNICATING.
Every symptom is information:
- About what’s out of balance
- About what needs attention
- About where you’ve strayed from HOME
Symptoms are breadcrumbs showing you the way back.
Examples From My Practice
Woman with chronic migraines:
Western view: Blood vessels dilating, needs medication
Chinese Medicine view: Liver Yang rising (stuck anger, unexpressed truth, violated boundaries)
What her body was saying: “You keep swallowing your truth. I will create unbearable pressure until you SPEAK.”
Woman with weight that won’t budge:
Western view: Calories in/out, metabolism problem
Ayurvedic view: Kapha accumulation (not being nourished emotionally, filling void with food, Spleen Qi deficiency)
What her body was saying: “You’re not actually HUNGRY for food. You’re homesick. And no amount of eating will fill that.”
Woman with severe PMS:
Western view: Hormonal imbalance, needs birth control
Chinese Medicine view: Liver Qi stagnation (emotions stuck, boundaries weak, truth unexpressed)
What her body was saying: “Once a month I amplify what you ignore the other three weeks. LISTEN.”
See the pattern?
Symptoms aren’t random. They’re SPECIFIC GUIDANCE.
The Breadcrumb Trail
Here’s what symptoms actually do:
They show you where you’ve abandoned yourself.
Where you:
- Override your body’s needs
- Ignore intuition
- Violate your own boundaries
- Perform instead of being authentic
- Exile yourself from HOME
Each symptom is a breadcrumb saying: “You went off the path HERE. Come back.”
Why Suppressing Symptoms Doesn’t Work
When you suppress a symptom without addressing what it’s communicating, two things happen:
- The symptom gets louder (mild headache → migraine → chronic illness)
- New symptoms emerge (suppress anxiety, develop insomnia; suppress pain, develop digestive issues)
Because your body WILL be heard.
It will keep leaving breadcrumbs, escalating the message, until you finally LISTEN.
Learning to Read the Breadcrumbs
This is what I do with women in my practice:
Acupuncture: I read what your body is saying through:
- Pulse (quality, depth, rhythm tells me which organs stressed)
- Tongue (coating, color, shape shows imbalances)
- Symptoms (not just what, but WHEN – time of day, cycle phase, emotional triggers)
1:1 C.O.A.C.H. Intensive: We decode together:
- What this symptom is actually communicating
- Where you abandoned yourself
- What your body needs from you
- How to respond instead of suppress
Not fixing. TRANSLATING.
